Taste of Chicago, Vegan Style

It's here! Now through Sunday, July 12, you can head over to Taste of Chicago in Grant Park to sample food from a multitude of Chicago restaurants. This year, 60 restaurants are participating. Taste of Chicago also also boasts fashion tents, a wine and jazz garden, cooking demonstrations, and live music from Weezer, Saint Motel, Erykah Badu, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Spoon, and many more. Get a nice run-down of the event from WGN here.

We have just the thing to take along this year: the Citibag from Wilby. This purse is made from sustainable cork leather (all vegan) and can be worn across the body or carried as a clutch. It's lightweight, small enough to carry comfortably in a crowd, and big enough to hold all the essentials. (For more information on the British vegan brand Wilby, check out their designer page.) We love the Citibag in electric blue, but you can't go wrong with any color.

Now that we've made a suggestion as to what to take with you to the Taste, let's talk about what you can eat there. The most well advertised options are a vegan burger from Beat Kitchen and, right next door, a spicy black bean and corn tamale from Dia De Los Tamales. We've also heard reports of the following vegan options:

  • Corn on the cob at Mariano's and O'Brien's (confirm that they leave off the butter)
  • Avocado toast and watermelon gazpacho at Farmer's Fridge
  • Chap chae at Jin Ju
  • Sorbet, Italian ice, and paletas from various vendors

You can also participate in Humana's Healthier Choices program to win prizes. Each time you purchase a Humana-approved healthy option, you receive a stamp from the vendor. Collect six stamps and you can enter a contest for as-of-yet-undisclosed-online prizes. For your convenience, we recommend consulting Humana's Healthier Choices program before seeking stamps: "healthy" is subjective and Humana may disagree with you about the definition. On a side note, according to a press release from Humana, this is the first year that the company has even included vegetarian options in its Healthier Choices program. Wow.

If you make it to the Taste, please report back to us! We want to know what you enjoyed and what you didn't.

P.S. Thank you to Monica S. from the Chicago Vegans Facebook group for her food recommendations.
